NOTES

Do not sl st at the end of a round unless stated otherwise.

For the pattern visuals, I’m demonstrating with the color “Lichen”, used for the frog’s body. Save for embroidery placement, all of the instructions are exactly the same for both frog and bear.

Tension Awareness: Keep your tension uniform to prevent the applique from warping.

Yarn & Material Substitutions

Some of you may want to know if you can use different materials to bring this animal applique duo to life. Of course! But remember that switching up your yarn will change the structural shape and overall size of your finished frog and bear motifs.

For these designs, I stick to a light weight (3) cotton/bamboo blend (Coboo brand) and a 2.50mm hook. This combination ensures the project stays pocket-sized, while the high cotton content keeps the stitches tight and structured so the animal faces stay perfectly flat and circular without warping.

If you are looking to pull from your current yarn stash, here are a few fun ways to substitute:

Fine Weight (2) Sock or Sport Yarn: If you want to make these character patches even smaller (perfect for a pocket accent, a bucket hat, or a coin purse), size down to a fine sport yarn and a 2.0mm hook.

Light Weight (3) Anti-Pilling Acrylic: Substituting an anti-pilling acrylic yarn will keep the appliques roughly the same size as my prototypes, but they will have a much softer, cloud-like texture. Just make sure to maintain a tight tension.

Keep Yarn Weights Consistent: Ultimately, the trick to this pattern is ensuring you use the exact same yarn brand and weight for both the frog and the bear. This guarantees they stay perfectly proportional to one another when displayed side-by-side on your projects!

Creative Ways to Use Your Animal Applique Duo

Because these appliques are flat, lightweight, and sturdy, they are absolute perfection for embellishing textiles and personal accessories. Here are some fun ways to style and share your finished frog and bear set:

Custom Patchwork Overalls & Denim: Sew this animal duo onto the front pockets of a denim jacket, a pair of canvas overalls, or a casual tote bag. It adds a direct pop of whimsical, indie-aesthetic flair to your everyday wardrobe.

Backpack & Patch Embellishments: Sew a small strip of Velcro or iron-on adhesive backing to the reverse side of the appliques. This allows you or a loved one to attach them onto backpacks, pencil cases, or hats, switching them out whenever you want a new look.

Handmade Headbands & Hair Clips: Securely attach your flat frog or bear applique onto a plain metal alligator hair clip, a snap clip, or a fabric headband using a dab of hot glue or fabric adhesive. These make the most darling, comfortable hair accessories for matching best friend sets or quick gifts that work up in minutes.

Custom Patchwork Overalls & Pockets: Instead of taking up an entire garment, these miniature appliques are the perfect scale to sew onto the tiny coin pocket of a pair of denim jeans, the corner of a shirt collar, or the front pocket of canvas overalls. It adds a subtle pop of whimsical flair to your everyday wardrobe without overwhelming the clothing.
