Frog and Cat Testers
My lovely testers from the Ribblr crochet community!
Turn your hat inside out, sl st the 3 stitches at the sides of your first and last row together to close the brim.

Choosing yarn and hook size:

For amigurumi, a standard rule of thumb is to use up to 3 hook sizes smaller than what is listed on the skein of yarn you choose.

The yarn and hook size you choose will affect the size and appearance of your finished product.

Choosing yarn and hook size

Optional:

You can add weighted beads if you use this pattern for room decor and you want it to stand upright on its own.

Softer yarn tends to round more at the bottom of the cat body.

If you prefer a completely flat look, you could trace around row 4 and cut out a rounded piece of cardboard to add to the bottom part of the inside before stuffing.

Abbreviation Key:

sc – single crochet (yarn under method)

MR – magic ring

inc – increase (invisible method)

dec – decrease (invisible method)

blo – back loop only

flo – front loop only

Note

I used the yarn under method for most of the single crochet stitches, except for when working on the bow.

We will be working in rounds for the cat’s head and body, as well as the frog’s body.

Symbol Key

X Indicates how many times to repeat the line of text with the brackets – [ ]

( ) Indicates how many stitches you should have by the end of the row.

Yarn & Material Substitutions

Some of you may want to know if you can use different materials to create these little animal friends. Of course you can! But as with any crochet project, your choice of yarn will directly affect the final shape, size, and character of your finished frog and cat.

For the versions featured here, I love using a medium (4) weight cotton yarn. Cotton is absolute perfection for small amigurumi and character designs because it offers crisp stitch definition. Cotton also has very little natural stretch, which gives a sturdy, structured feel so your toys look neat, without slouching or losing their shape.

However, experimenting with your yarn stash is half the fun! Here are a few alternative materials you could use and how they will change your project:

Plush Velvet or Chenille Yarn: Want larger, huggable versions of the frog and cat? Substitute the medium cotton yarn for a thick, chunky velvet or blanket yarn and jump up to a 5.0mm or 6.0mm hook. This will instantly scale up the pattern, transforming them from small desk companions into squishy plushies that make amazing gifts!

Medium Weight Acrylic Yarn: If you use a standard medium weight acrylic yarn instead of cotton, your characters will turn out roughly the same size but will have a slightly softer, fuzzier texture. Because acrylic yarn is more pliable and has more stretch, you will want to hold a slightly tighter tension so that your stitches stay close together.

Safety Eye Substitutions: While I love the glossy look of plastic safety eyes, they aren’t always a requirement (and shouldn’t be used if you are gifting these to a baby or toddler). Feel free to substitute them by embroidering simple sleepy eyes or little French knots using a scrap strand of black or dark brown yarn.

No matter what yarn you decide to use, try to keep the yarn weight consistent between both the frog and the cat. Feel free to play with fun colors—A pastel pink frog would be absolutely adorable!

Your version might look a bit different than my prototype, but it will still come out incredibly cute, and whimsical!
